Canoeing

I have had my first canoe experience last weekends. Put on a lifejacket, get in to canoe, very brief and basic paddling technique introduction and off to short trip. It was only difficult at beginning to go straight forward, but got hang of it soon.
This is fantastic! That all I can say. It is totally different feeling than usual lowing boat. So relaxing and can pay attention to surroundings.
I am totally hooked to this canoeing. This time was only short trip around few islands on lake, but would be so much fun to take long canoe trip going lake to lake.

JPBKβ2をちょっと変更 – Little modification to JPBK beta II

I have made small modification to the JPBK beta II. The modification is to the sheath, replacing the 550code to leather belt loop.
JPBKβ2-  JPBK beta II befor modification. ↓↓↓

The reasons of making this modification are:
1> 550 code as belt is too thin and unstable. Something wider code would to better, but cant find one I like to use.
2> I have got a nice belt which planning to be a outdoor belt kit. So really wanted to utilize my new belt.

And so, this is what came up.
↓↓↓↓

It was surprisingly difficult to set the small belt buckle to good position. Tiny bit foreword or backward will make the buckle sticks out.
For the loop, which secures the knife to the sheath, I took the idea from one of Chris Grant’s knife. It has elastic code between snap buttons. So when the button is released, it opens up itself and does not get on the way of blade.

I have tried this new sheath with the belt, and I really like it. It bit feels like hanging Colt SAA or something. Tried the backpack on as well. And it does not get on the way of hip belt of the backup. Can’t wait to complete this belt kit and get out to autumn forest.

Emännän veitsi –

Fiskars 2

There is a Fiskars’ history and products exhibition at Fiskars shop.

It is very impressible display of Fiskars knives here, but the most interesting display was miniature model of blast furnace and smith shop.

the size of the blast furnace is impressive, but what impressed me most was the gimmicks of powering the bellows and power hammer. It is powered by water mills and was very interesting to see how the power was transferred to hammers and bellows.
After the visit to Fiskars, back to camp. Spend some relaxing evening. But since, night before, we have had quite bad raining at nighttime. And the tent we have did not hold the rain well. it started leak a bit. So, need to reinforce with the canvas poncho tarp on top of tent.  As expected, we have had downpour again this night, but the tarp held the rain very well. Actually, it held the rain much better than modern tent fabric.

The last day, we stopped by at Billnäs on the way back home. We weren’t expencting much from this place since it is not sight-seeing:nized .

But, it is more like ruin. Really not much to see. Just few shops and restaurants.

It was disappointing at Billnäs, but the trip was really enjoyable. Other than the blades and metal and blacksmith things, there are many different handcraft shops and workshops around this area. I did not write about it but handcrafted wooden furniture and its workshops are also very interesting attraction. I hear that Fiskars Christmas markets are also nice to visit, perhaps will visit that this winter.

Fiskars

I have had family trip to Tammisari, Fiskars and Billnäs during the last week of my vacation.

With 3 dogs, it is difficult to use hotel, so using camping area in Tamisaari as Hotel.

On 2nd day, we head to Fiskars. This place is a very popular tourist spot, so lots to see. And it is the place, that company “Fiskars” was founded, so I was very exited.

So many old Fiskars products are on display. You can clearly see the craftsmanship from those. It is totally different quality from these days mass produced products.

I have been looking for this old Fiskars razor. Sometimes see them on free market, but none of them are usable condition. Would like to get one some day.

These are the old-time skis. Look at the length of those.

There was a special exhibition of “TOOLS”, so stopped by.

the Axe making steps.

Puukko making steps.

And this was quite surprising to me. Fiskars still uses WOOD for making mockups! I was imagining that these days they all uses CAD and CNC machine tools to cut out the plastic form to make mock ups, but no! it still is wood.

There were so may interesting tools on desplay, and so frastrating that cant touch any of them.

There are may buildings using BLACK bricks. First I was just thnking that “it is a very uncommon color for bricks…”. So went to have a lose look at…

And Guess What?! It is not a ordinaly brick. It is made from some kind of metal! My guess is by slag from old time blast furnace. I try to find someone who knows about it, but no sucsess.

to be continued.

August 2nd, I went for Bushcraft camping. The original plan was to stay 2 nights 3 days, but I have been having really short sleeping time for a while till this trip, so the accumulated tired condition caused flue. So needed to cut the trip short.
However, I have enjoyed as much as I could, so that is OK.

I have started the trip about noon and have reached the destination around 14:00. I have chosen this location because I knew it is not the popular fire pit location.

But, as soon as I arrived, I have found out that the fire wood storage is completely empty.  There usually place like this has something always, but here, even the woodchips are gone. No wonder this place is not popular. Well,,, I just needed to get some from forest.

Luckily, the forest here has lots of easy firewood rescues, I just needed to drag them out from forest around. For the kindling, I have corrected the dried up under branches from fir tree. And Japanese wrapping cloth call “Froshiki” was very useful for this task. This 1.1m by 1.1m bandana like wrapping cloth has so much applications, carrying, wrapping, wearing, binding and so on so on…

Once enough firewoods were collected, I went to get some water for boiling, and accident has happened.

My phone slipped out from poket and went in to the lake...

I am busy going things, but dogs are not.

Finally got chance to use my “Hobo fishing kit” this time. And I got some fish for dinner.

Stomach filled and getting tired, so get to bed early. But woke up about 4:00, because really cold air flowing in to. Couldn’t sleep much.

Bannock and pine needle tea for breakfast.

Taking breakfast while observing a wild life. Sinnu stands guard the perimeter. Then taking fire wood as toy…

Re-set up the shelter and took nap for a while... Sinnu came to wake me up around afternoon teatime…
Took nap but not feeling better at all... but wanted to do something, so started making bushbow.
while making bush bow, had some tea, then dinner. But really start to feel like flue. Dry eyes, irritating throat, unclear head… took 2 doses of Scho-Ka-Kola and start packing. Usually I spend about 1h for this track, but managed to get back to the car in 30min… when I reached home, I had no energy left.
